Come and Play in our Winter Wonderland!

Winter in the UP is like living in a white fairy tale filled with beautiful nature scenarios and endless winter activities. While winter's beauty is breathtaking,  winter can be very dangerous in the UP! If you are not used to the conditions an outing can quickly turn into an iffy situation. Our guides know where to go and when to go, but also, more importantly, they know when and where not to go. We invite you to experience a world of wonder and beauty without to worry about safety.

  • HIKING LAKE SUPERIOR's ICE CREATIONS
Boulders in Lake Superior are covered with ice and snow which starts melting as soon as the sun comes out. The melt water instantly freezes over as running down the bolder. Best time for viewing these beautiful formations is in end of February and all of March.
Icicles on the Lake
After a storm boulders and trees along the shore line are covered with a sheet of ice sparkling in the sun shine like a million of diamonds.
After the Storm
Icicle Branches
Once a storm is over the sun comes out, the skies turn blue, and the ice coatings on every tree and branch looks like covered in sparkling diamonds.
Crystal Tree
Snowshoes will allow you to go places you cannot go to in the summer. After a fresh snowfall your tracks might be the only ones in the undisturbed snow cover. It makes you feel like you are an explorer at the end of the world.
Snowshoe Tracks
Depending on the weather conditions, Lake Superior starts building ice dunes in late December and they typically hold until the middle of March. Ice conditions can change by the minute. We do not recommend to go on the ice unless you are with our most experienced guide. You will be in good hands to experience a once in a lifetime adventure.
Lake Superior Ice Dunes
Ice Volcanoes are a rare natural occurrence. They form as the ice freezes over the bays. Wave action continues under the icy surface looking for an escape route. If there is a weak spot in the ice the water forces its way through to the surface. The water's force increases the size of the whole and the water spews out just like a geyser and builds up an ice cylinder looking like a volcano. Ice Volcanoes start forming end of December and are typically visible until the middle of March. Early in the season one can see active volcanos. As the season goes on the water supply is cut off and the volcanos freeze in time.
Ice Vulcano
Wind plays a big role in creating ice formations. Typically in the later part of winter (Middle of February to April) the wind will break up the lake ice and carry it out to the open waters. When the wind turns it brings the broken ice sheets back to shore. In the process the ice sheets bump into each other cutting of the sharp edges and transforming them into round discs. If you stand close to the pancake ice you can hear the music of little icicles dinging against each other as the discs move up and down as the lake rhythmically breathes.
Pancake Ice
A veil of frozen water curtains; depending on the angle of the sight source you will see all kinds of rainbow colors.
Frozen Waterfall Curtain
Sometimes it gets so cold that frost needles grow on objects. In this case it was about negative 30F, the sun was out, and nothing was stirring. A breathtaking sight!
Tree Frozen in Time
Blue Ice is a color you cannot explain. It is pure and beautiful and when conditions align correctly you can see Blue Ice along Lake Superior shores. Our guides are always informed of sighting locations.
Blue Ice
There are several locations in the UP where you can experience frozen waterfalls. Sometimes the most spectacular nes are not accessible due to safety concerns. However, typically the smaller ones have easy access.
Frozen Falls
X- Skiing is one of the activities that bring you right into winter wonderland. Unlike other outfitters we do not go on groomed trails and we do not use state of the art equipment. Instead we take clients without any experience out into the wilderness of the woods making our own trails. Just us, the trees, and snow - a lot of snow!
Cross Country Skiing
No experience necessary! We will teach you how to snowshoe and we have trails that fit any ability level.
